EXPERIMENTAL FILM

CONTEMPORARY FILM - TRUMP

The purpose of this short film is to touch down on the situation thats been happening over across the atlantic and the recent protests against America's 45th President Donald Trump. Considering Trump is the most talked about issue of late with his new foreign and domestic policies, I wanted to comment visually by merging the protesters against the voice of Trump. Personally I liked the contrast this film created with what we see on the news and how American society depicts him. In my short video those who stand against Trump, silenced by the overwhelming voice which is ironic as Trump being the leader and spokesmen for his country is meant to be singular voice speaking on behalf of his people to the world.

The image below is my own propaganda pieces made to accompany the short contemporary film about the conflict today with Donald Trump. I used the Statue of Liberty because it signifies freedom and felt this was a interesting contrast to play upon. To complete the propaganda piece I added elements of trump to symbolise control over freedom which relates back to his immigration bans and Mexican wall policies.

MATERIALISM

This week we were tasked to create another short video as part of our weekly assignment. The theme for this was materialism.

Drawing inspiration from one or more of the video artists we have explored, create a short one to two minute work (or work in progress) referencing the materiality of the digital (as opposed to analogue film).
This could be the internet, social media, apps, gaming or digital technology of any kind You might want to explore how images can be manipulated through using premier pro software for example. Think about making something that might play as a loop ie playing over and over again.

MATERIALISM

The inspiration for my short film was the idea that society revolves around currency to survive. But that we survive only to continue earning currency. How we do this in this era is through technological means such as online banking, ATM's, Paypal etc.. this is emphasised by the computerised voice over.

TIME - Experimental Media

Time - Short Film

We were given a the theme of Time and allowed creative control to explore the theme in whatever way we wanted. At the end of the project we had to produce a short film. My first idea was to create a time lapse of my own personal photographs from Birth to the present day, this would show the idea of change and growth over time. However I decided to explore something more symbolic and suggestive, similar to the work of Bill Viola.

This new approach did require much more planning, and a larger crew to capture all of the shots that I wanted. It also required strict safety precautions due to the use of fire.

Finished Film

I wanted to show a measure of time, and how it consumes. I feel that I successfully showed this by using the fire and showing how it consumes the rope that it is lit upon. The rope was positioned around to represent a clock, further placing emphasis of time. If I was to create this project again, I would have made the clock much more clear and detailed.

LIGHTING WORKSHOP II

LIGHTING WORKSHOP II

A SHOWREEL OF GELS AND LIGHTING

Overall I'm pleased with the set ups created in this workshop and so decided to make a short showreel of some of the shots we managed to achieve in this lighting workshop. Working as a team of 6 or more we managed to execute a 3 point lighting technique using a complicated set up involving back lights, fill lights and key lights, filters and other textures to break up unwanted shadows. Doing so we managed to get a desired affect using these useful techniques.

DANCE RUSHES TEST PROJECT

As part of our second workshop into premier pro editing, we were tasked in recreating a dance video, using the rushes from a past students work in order to create our own edited version of the dance video. Although we got to use a vast array of tools to construct our videos, I was particularly annoyed  at the fact that I was having issues with downloading half of the clips in order to recreate my piece. This was because my hard drive wasn't compatible with the computer system I had access to, therefore I had to make do with what I had on the cloud. So without further ado, here is my edited dance video!

PREMIER PRO WORKSHOP

Reflecting on the Premier Pro Workshop

What is Premier Pro?

Premier Pro is a video editing software application created by Adobe suitable for both amateur enthusiasts and professionals. It has been used by many major studios on a variety of feature films, television programs, music videos and other productions. The software is accessible by subscribing to the Adobe Creative Cloud.

EXPERIMENT

We looked at the basics of using Premier Pro, like cropping the image or jump cutting. We also got to edit our own pieces into a sequence of scenes that would flow continuously to provide a minutes length of documentary. This was to purposefully teach us the basics of film editing and provide us with insight into creating film feature length documentaries.

Below was my sequence of scenes that I used with footage provided by Lynda.com to experiment and   explore the uses of premier pro. In my short scene I used footage with an overlay of voices to fit with the flow of imagery and also experimented with green screen, which I had quite a bit of fun with as you can see.
