Hudson River near Catskill, New York. In which he rented a small cottage from a fellow photographer. Using collectibles from the forties and fifties, Tress Wanted to construct a still life piece without yet the knowledge of his theme. Coincidentally. Catskill had been home to the famous painter, Thomas Cole. Who in his time began a series of paintings called 'The Voyages Of Life.' This story suggests the four stages of a man's life.
Arthur Tress wanted to depict the poetic narrative of an anglers journey through time and existence.
However Tress did go on to mention and I quote.

The Automaton
Throughout the tale, it explores the sacred friendship between the old man and his newly made friend.
But when the Nazis return...they round up the last few remaining Jews.
What I'm most fond about with these two artists is that they captivate human life through the efforts of narrative story. Their attempts to recreate situations that are part of a real piece of work or connected to a real event in time, inspires each to create their own unique meaning.
Another point that can be made is the difference between the use of colours. One of them is realistically accurate and the other is surreal (dreamlike). But there can be a connection made between the two because they both contrast life.
Now a question for you my readers. What narrative story are you fond of ?

This post is rather thin on the ground, Oliver. 7 sentences on Arthur Tress does not suggest much effort. Your reflection on Paolo Ventura amounts to even less. I can’t imagine this took more than half an hour. This assignment is part of your portfolio assessment and your post does not reach a level 4 standard of research or evaluation. Luckily everyone has to start somewhere, and so I suggest you take this opportunity to look at the work of your peers and then revisit your two chosen photographers and create another more reflective post.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased that you started by looking at books and magazines to find your choice of photographers but that is only a beginning. Good research means consulting a wide range of sources. You should also keep the brief to hand because it details exactly what you need to do to complete the assignment properly.
You have chosen to look at two photographers who use photography to create strange and magical realities, using found materials put into the landscape in the case of Tress and constructed miniature sets or painted backdrops and masquerade for Ventura – this is an unusual approach and well worth investigating in greater detail. You have discovered a potentially exciting way of approaching portraiture so please do it justice.
Tress is a well respected photographer and so there are many articles and interviews with him. A quick trawl on the internet will provide you with a wealth of material. There is a lot of scope here to compare and contrast Tress with Ventura and I am sure when you reflect more deeply on what both photographers are trying to do you may discover an approach that might work for your own portrait project. Do come and talk to me about this assignment if you want to.
